There is a quiet epidemic in branding: the safe rebrand. The one that sands off every edge, tests well in every focus group, and is forgotten the moment the deck closes. It is the most expensive way to change nothing.
Safe work is a rational response to risk. Nobody was ever fired for choosing the inoffensive option. But brands are not built by avoiding mistakes — they are built by making decisions other people are unwilling to make.
Conviction is uncomfortable precisely because it is legible. A point of view can be argued with. That is the point. The brands that move markets are the ones willing to be disliked by the right people in service of being loved by the right ones.
The job of an agency is not to remove risk from creativity. It is to make sure the risk you take is the right one — strategically grounded, beautifully executed, and impossible to ignore.
So the next time the work feels a little too comfortable, ask the only question that matters: if our competitor launched this tomorrow, would anyone notice? If the answer is no, you have not made a brand. You have made wallpaper.
